I just spent the weekend at Kalahari at the Great Homeschool Conference.  I have another small business—an Etsy store with glitter tumblers and other inspirational gifts—and my friends and I had a vendor table.  I love being surrounded by homeschoolers and other people passionate about education!  I had so many awesome conversations with people.  My mind was blown by all the curriculum choices, planners, enrichment programs, and so many types of math!  It can certainly be overwhelming!

I homeschooled my four kids from beginning to end, although I still have one at home.  I know homeschooling isn’t a good fit for every family, but it was perfect for us.  We had various help and support over the years from a cottage school to online classes to community college.  But in the end, we decided what to do and when, and I wrote their high school transcripts.  I’m not here to be a homeschool evangelist, and I know that sometimes it doesn’t work well for the students or the parents, for any number of reasons.  But if you’ve decided it is the right fit for your family, maybe I can help.

I talked in another post about the tutoring services I offer for kids in traditional school, but I also offer homeschool support in a variety of ways.

Math class:

I have worked with several homeschoolers over the years as their primary math teacher.  I can choose books, meet weekly to teach new material and look over the week’s work, and answer questions via text in between.  I’m also happy to with with students who are behind in math to catch them up to grade level.  In some cases I’ve helped students who are transitioning schools get ready for the differing expectations, and supported them until they feel stable in the new environment.  I am flexible and creative and love a challenge.  Your student just never learned fractions and is now trying to do high school science?  I can help with that.  No judgement here!  I’ve seen a lot.

Advising:

New to homeschooling and thinking about getting started but lost in the choices?  I can help with that!  I help families choose a direction and narrow down choices as they get started.  Setting reasonable expectations is a recipe for success and I can help!

I’m happy to work with families as they plan for the next school year.  I can help with curriculum choice, structure, and guidelines for the school year.  This would probably look like one or two sessions in the late spring or early summer and then check ins on an as needed basis.

I also can meet with families and students monthly or bi weekly to check in on progress across all subjects, discuss pain points, come up with solutions, and in general hold the students (and the parents!) accountable for progress.

High school homeschooling is often a hodgepodge of classes from different sources.  I can meet with you and your student each semester to look over graduation requirements (or choices) and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.  I have experience both with students going toward competitive colleges and students looking toward minimal graduation requirement.

College planning:

SAT/ACT. I’m happy to talk to you and your student about testing choices—when to start, which one to take, how to get help, how to navigate the red tape involved.  Some kids do better with one or the other and I can help choose how to make your student’s skills shine the brightest.

College entrance—I can help navigate the application process, homeschool transcript, and all the other details and paperwork involved.

I love homeschoolers and love working with them—I’m here to help your family get through the tricky parts so you can focus on the things you love and avoid the headaches.  :).
